Stephen Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, has released his 3rd annual New Year’s resolution survey on his Franklin Covey website. . The results are not surprising. Getting organized is ranked 4th on the list! Check out the link by clicking here.
Here are some tips to help you get started this month:
1. Decide what one space you want to focus on organizing. Start small- pick one room or space to organize.
2. Decide what you want to use that space as. Anything that doesn’t meet that goal or intention – shouldn’t be left in that space.
3. Make 5 piles- recycle, trash, donate, give backs (things that aren’t yours), & things that don’t belong in this space because they aren’t going to help you meet that space’s purpose
4. Sweep around the room in a one direction touching every single thing. Don’t bounce around the room (you’ll get overwhelmed and mix piles).
5. After picking up one thing at a time decide which pile it goes into.
6. After going through the whole room, take the time to walk the recycle and trash outside. Limit your time you give yourself to give back the items that aren’t your to friends or family members-if you don’t do it in the next 2 weeks- donate the items. Finally, drive your donations to the nearest donation drop off place. You’ll feel a real sense of completion by getting it out of your house now instead of waiting for the charity to come pick it up.
7. Whatever is left as a keeper in the room should be a help to what you want to use that room or space as, not a hindrance. If it doesn’t meet that room’s purpose, it’s missed one of the 5 piles it should have been placed into. It’s not too late. Get it out of that room/space.

Organization Tips
